Mitigating the Influence of Politics on Real Estate

Kimberly Small July 24, 2024

While summer in Florida has never been the ideal time to sell real estate, this summer is especially challenging due to it being an election year. If we listen to the media, it might seem like the world is coming to an end, and if that were true, who would buy property? But I can assure you, the world isn't ending. Someone will get elected, and some people will be happy about it while others won't. This cycle has been ongoing for decades, as you may have noticed.

The main difference now is our access to information. Two decades ago, we relied on the morning paper or the morning and evening news. Today, information is refreshed by the second, leading the media to create news rather than just report it. This has contributed to what many refer to as "unprecedented times." Personally, I miss "precedented times," when we could pause and enjoy life without fear of some mythical impending doom.

Remember when you could decide to sell your house simply because you wanted a bigger house, a smaller house, a condo, or to move to a different city? You could plan your next move without feeling rushed, appreciating the value gained from living in your home for a decade or more. There wasn't a rush of people fleeing other states due to overreaching policies, causing a housing frenzy and inflated property values.

We are returning to a time when fear isn't driving decision-making and the market. While government actions continue to influence our consumer market, it's time we make the decision to continue doing business without letting politics dominate our choices.
